Countdown to liftoff

Adahlia’s mom here.

We are officially a month out from leaving home for Adahlia’s bone marrow transplant.

I’ll be posting more to this website over the next few weeks, and of course, also during the transplant process.

We took this photo this past weekend on a quick trip over to North Myrtle Beach, which happens to only be about 2 hours from our home. One of Adahlia’s favorite things to do is to be in and around nature, especially mountains, lakes, and oceans. Because of the need to prevent Graft vs Host disease (GVHD), I will have to keep her out of dirt, water, and anything that could stimulate her immune system for a year after the transplant. So, I figured we needed one last quick trip out to beach to find seashells.

It makes me smile to think of all the wild adventures we’ve had over the years. I’ve shared them privately, but now we will share them publicly (now that Adahlia is old enough to grant permission and be fully on board) with the hope of flipping mindsets.

You see, I believe (and Adahlia does, too) that the BEST way to make something difficult and crappy survivable (like a diagnosis of Diamond Blackfan Anemia or other life-limiting fortune) is to counter that difficulty with AMAZING and FUN games and adventures.

We’ve been living this way for years now.

Like boxers in the ring, we have refused to give in, even when our losses have mounted.

We are real about what we face; we don’t shy from hard truths. We won’t be shamed for our struggle or for our victories, and we continually reorient ourselves back to our true north.

We’ve been unstoppable in our determination to both play and succeed.

And while her diagnosis is not something any sane person would ever desire… we’ve actually been able to make aspects of this experience into something that people envy.

Can you believe that?

That’s a heck of a #win in my opinion!

We invite you to join us.

Let’s turn the curse of medical trauma, medication, closed doors, and unreachable potential into powerful, unstoppable, and beautiful existences dedicated to living like we are magnets for the miraculous!

Let’s show the world what it looks like to live for seized moments, magical experiences, joy, love, and fellowship.

Let’s believe in the goodness of our destinies.

We’ve come this far and our voices have only grown stronger.

So, let the countdown begin!

We’re so grateful to have stayed at George’s AirBnB condo/apartment at Baywatch Resorts in North Myrtle Beach!

With a fully stocked kitchen, balcony, ground-floor restaurants, multiple hot tubs, pools, and lazy rivers (both indoors and out!) his cozy little unit provided everything we needed for a quick and precious getaway at a very reasonable out-of-season price!

We were psyched to get to swim in a pool since the ocean was much, much too cold - unless you’re a jellyfish!
